Psilocin and Bufotenine Testing in Urine

We are announcing the addition of psilocin and bufotenine to our urine drug testing. These psychoactive substances can be ordered as an individual test or an add-on to any urine drug panel beginning January 6, 2025.

What is Psilocin?

Psilocin is the active metabolite of psilocybin and an alkaloid found naturally in certain types of psychedelic mushrooms.

What is Bufotenine?

Bufotenine is an alkaloid found in some species of mushrooms, plants, and toads, and it is known for its psychoactive effects. It is also found naturally in the human body in small amounts.

Special Collection Instructions:
Psilocin is known to have limited stability in some individual biological specimens.  Once a urine specimen has been collected, additional steps must be followed to ensure specimen validity.

• Specimen must be protected from light.  After collection and placement of the tamper evidence seal, wrap the entire container in aluminum foil.
• Specimen must be shipped chilled.  Packaging should be insulated and an ice pack/cool pack included with shipment.
• If the specimen is not shipped immediately, store as follows:
  • Stored for < 3 days – refrigerated or frozen
  • Stored for > 3 days – frozen
  • Stability window ~24 hours

The following list is provided solely for informational purposes. We do not endorse or recommend any particular product as long as it is sufficient to meet the criteria when it arrives in the laboratory.

• Thermal Bubble Mailer– holds cold pack and foil-wrapped specimen inside shipping box.
• Foil Cooler Boxes– holds cold pack and foil-wrapped specimen.
• Insulated Shippers and Supplies – holds cold pack and foil wrapped specimen.
• FedEx Cold Shipping Boxes – holds foil-wrapped specimen – does not require cold pack.

Aluminum foil and insulated packaging/cold packs must be provided by the collection site. Urine specimens that do not meet the above criteria will be rejected for psilocin/bufotenine testing.
