Insurance Companies

Drug and alcohol testing has been incorporated into many life insurance examinations to monitor specific health and lifestyle issues of applicants. Moderate to heavy drinkers reflect an increased risk to these companies.

USDTL offers a variety of test panels to meet the needs of life insurance companies. USDTL offers drug test panels in urine, hair, nails, oral fluid and blood. The test of interest to most insurance companies is one of our blood tests, PEthStatSM. The PethStatSM assay requires an individual to consume one drink to two drinks per day for a week in order to trigger a positive alcohol result. Following this level of consumption the individual will remain positive for a two to three week period. Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid that is only increased by drinking alcohol. Environmental issues are not a factor in the test results. This assay is a direct biomarker, since the PEth level increases with the amount of alcohol consumed. A new bloodspot PEth assay is currently in development. This assay will use blood collected by a fingerstick and dropped onto filter paper. Another bloodspot assay in development will monitor cotinine, the primary metabolite of nicotine. Both assays are planned for release in 2010.
